Speculation Builds on the Future of Fallout
According to reporting by Jordan Middler from Video Games Chronicle (VGC), Xbox and Bethesda are working on several new Fallout projects, including at least one highly anticipated by fans. While none of these titles are far enough along to expect a release in the immediate future, industry rumours point to possible remasters, sequels, and even a return to some of the franchise’s most beloved settings.
Remaster Rumours and Sequel Hopes
Among the projects reportedly under consideration, the most persistent speculation surrounds a remastered edition of Fallout 3. Early rumours about such a remaster emerged alongside news of an Oblivion Remastered, though the return of Fallout 3 appears to be further down the pipeline.
Fans are also eagerly awaiting any news of Fallout 5, though Bethesda’s Todd Howard has already stated there’s no rush on development. The community widely expects that any significant progress on a new mainline entry will only follow the eventual release of The Elder Scrolls 6.
The Allure of a New Vegas Comeback
There’s also plenty of excitement at the possibility of revisiting Fallout: New Vegas, especially since the original game was developed by Obsidian, a studio now part of the Xbox Game Studios family, just like Bethesda. The idea of a spiritual or direct sequel set in New Vegas remains a fan favourite, though there’s been no official confirmation.
Xbox Responds to Fallout’s TV-Driven Popularity
Xbox is well aware of Fallout’s powerful status in gaming, which has only grown following the success of the franchise’s recent TV adaptation. Despite Bethesda Game Studios’ continued focus on updating Fallout 76, it’s clear the development team is already looking to the future with multiple Fallout projects in the pipeline.
Official Announcements Still Pending
At this time, neither Xbox nor Bethesda has confirmed any details regarding upcoming Fallout releases. Jordan Middler, during a recent episode of the Skill Up podcast, emphasized that while several Fallout games are in the works—including a title “everyone wants”—none are close to launch.
Fans hoping for immediate updates were left disappointed after the latest Xbox Games Showcase, which included no new Fallout announcements outside of additional Fallout 76 content. With Fallout 76 experiencing stagnation in its endgame and the next TV season at least six months away, the wait for substantial franchise news continues.
Industry Voices Add Fuel to Speculation
Further adding to the speculation, Jon Rush and Bill LaCoste from Bethesda Game Studios noted during the Summer Game Fest that the studio has “many ideas” for Fallout’s future, though specifics remain tightly under wraps.
Rumours of a Fallout 3 remaster have been circulating since last April, but its release doesn’t appear imminent. As for Fallout 5, even the most optimistic fans acknowledge it could be years away—perhaps even arriving on a hypothetical “PlayStation 8 Elite Pro.”
Fallout’s Legacy Remains Strong
While the current lack of official announcements may be disappointing, the enduring excitement and persistent rumours make it clear: Fallout is far from forgotten. Multiple projects seem to be in early development, and Bethesda is actively exploring ways to carry the iconic post-apocalyptic franchise forward. Gamers will have to remain patient, but for now, the future of Fallout looks busy—if a little distant.
