Shaar tradition continues with Elegant Tables
By Marylin Smith Carsley
Every year, it never ceases to impress its visitors, as the creativity and style displayed in the dishes, antiques and the other elegant objects featured in the Elegant Table Settings are beyond spectacular. But more importantly, the proceeds from this occasion are donated to a very worthwhile and necessary cause.
On May 9 and 10, the Sisterhood of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim will be showcasing one of their most anticipated events. Annually, these presentations are uniquely themed to demonstrate the artistic mode in the arranging of an elegant table. Strolling the entirety of the exhibition is an enriching experience and a treat to both the eye and imagination. Museum-like, it represents a live version of dining fashion and if someone is interested in tableware, antiques, this is an ideal venue to absorb some hints in this art, and an opportunity to broaden his or her knowledge.

Elegant table settings at this synagogue originated in 1994 when a book depicting elegant tables was purchased in New England. Immediately an idea was born and evolved into a Shaar tradition. Tables of the past have portrayed Jewish Holidays such as Rosh Hashannah, Passover, the Sabbath, birthday celebrations, or afternoon tea. In addition, there were and will continue to be some exotic floral arrangements, an array of antiques, silverware, crystal, china, tablecloths and napkins all immersed into fantasy themed luncheons and dinners, representing designs from all over the world. People in the community, decorators, collectors, gather and show their own display and the positive public response has always been quite overwhelming.

All proceeds from this event are directed towards a program at the Shaar, which has been ongoing for many years. Meals-on-Wheels caters to those Jewish seniors who are unable to venture outdoors. Healthy meals are prepared, packaged and delivered to their homes by generous volunteers. In addition, this service transports some live human contact to those individuals who are so lonely and isolated due to their lack of mobility.

This year’s Elegant Tables event will surpass expectations with an added feature called Avenue of Boutiques. Various high-end boutiques will present an eclectic viewing experience and an array of antiques and other items from Montreal and Toronto. Some of the Toronto participants are antique dealers Tim Manley and Jim Sheppard, jewelry designer Colette Harmon and Cathy B. Heartstrings Inc., Handbag designer Janis Breslin, plus others. In Montreal, a wide array of experts and designers are also involved notably one of Shaar Hashomayim’s cherished members and an originators of Elegant Tables, Milly Lande, with her lovely pashiminas, orchids, and delectable baked goods. A highlight to the event this year will be a raffle with spectacular prizes such as a gold evening purse, a vintage bracelet and matching earrings given by Carole Tannenbaum, Vintage Collection from Toronto. Ms Tannenbaum is a well-known author of her recently published book, “Fabulous Fakes….A Passion for Passion Vintage Costume Jewelry.” An antique piece from Roland Ribbehege, and Liberio Azevedo and another from Cary Leclaire are to be donated as well. This is a chance worth taking as either you will be fortunate in winning or you’ll be winning by contributing towards a much needed cause.

Many have volunteered expending extraordinary effort and organization to ensure the success of this event especially Sisterhood president Harriet Muroff, Milly Lande, and co-chairs Vicki Feil and Lenore Harris. This event should not be missed and the public should acknowledge the two scheduled dates and times. On May 9 at 6 p.m. the gala event to commence the show will be held at a cost of $200 per couple. This evening will include a petit souper, the vernissage and a sweet table. On May 10 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., for $60, the day will involve the touring of the elegant table settings and Avenue of Boutiques, along with a light lunch to be enjoyed in between. The public should take advantage of this unique day with friends or family, as it certainly will entertain as well as enlighten. It will also be a most wonderful way to distract oneself during the week among lovely picturesque surroundings.
