Discussing Mr. Pip
The Atwater Book Club, led by author Wednesday Mary Soderstrom, will discuss the acclaimed novel Mister Pip by Lloyd Jones on Wednesday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m.
The novel is based on the blockade in Bougainville in 1990 that began when the government of Papua New Guinea, supported by Australia, decided to take action against the traditional landowners and villagers of Bougainville in a way that has been compared to the clearings the Scottish and Irish governments did to their detractors.
Jones, a New Zealander who covered the story as a journalist, wrote the novel about the first few years of the blockade of Bougainville, the richest copper mine in the world, from the perspective of Matilda, a village girl who is 13 when it begins, and her relationship with Mr Watts aka Mr Pip, the last white man on the island, with his islander wife.
