Rotarians provide aid to Haiti
Around Westmount
The board of The Rotary Club of Westmount informed its members last week it has responded to the devastated earthquake victims in Haiti with two significant donations of primary and secondary aid.

A donation was given to the Canadian Red Cross and a second to the Rotary initiative Shelter Boxes that provides immediate shelter and life necessities in a box.

Both charities fill the requirements of the CIDA dollar-for-dollar match. Tax receiptable donations to either can be made at the Rotary office located in the lower level of the Manoir Westmount, 4646 Sherbrooke St. W.

For more information, phone Roberta at 514-935-3344. Cheques should be made payable to The Rotary Club of Westmount Friends, designated to either relief program.
Concert series begins at Mountainside
Mountainside United Church will host its first concert in the popular 2010 Concerts Plus Series on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. Philippe Bélanger, titular organist of St. Joseph’s Oratory, and Vanessa Rodrigues, local Hammond B-3 organ virtuoso, will present an eclectic program of classical and jazz repertoire assisted by Cordell Henebury on the guitar and Hans Verhoeven on drums.

“Philippe Bélanger is one of Québec’s most talented young organists, a graduate of the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec and McGill University,” said organizer Betsy Zukow. Belanger’s ATMA Classique recording of the Saint Saëns Symphonie no. 3, performed with the Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, won the 2006 ADISQ Felix Prize for classical album of the year and was nominated for Canada’s Juno award in the same category.

Mountainside United’s own Vanessa Rodrigues is one of Canada’s premier young jazz organists, having appeared at many Canadian jazz venues and festivals including the Banff Centre for the Arts’ jazz program and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Rodrigues has performed with the funk band Groove Prophecy and her own original soul-jazz organ trio. She has released three albums.

Since 2004 she has been the director of Teen Music Mountainside, the church’s youth band. Under her direction the group recorded their first CD Inspiration and has visited Boston and Toronto.

A meet and greet session at which the audience will have an opportunity to speak with the performers will be held after the concert.

Tickets, available at the door, are $15 and $12 for students and seniors. For more information phone the church office at 514-486-1165. Mountainside United Church is located at 4000 The Boulevard, corner of Lansdowne.
