Frosty fun returns to Westmount Feb. 4
The 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in British Columbia next month, but here in Westmount the spirit of the Games will be felt throughout the City's 27th annual Winter Carnival.
The line-up of events to be held Feb. 4 to 6 features most of the old favourites — but unique to this year's festivities will be a virtual trip to the Winter Olympics, to take place entirely in Victoria Hall, on Friday evening, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. First-class tickets for this event, which include dinner, soft drinks and dessert, are $10 for adults $5 for children 12 and under. They are currently on sale at Victoria Hall.
"That is sure to be a lot of fun," said Sports and Recreation coordinator Anitra Bostock. "We'll be setting up the Olympic Village in Victoria Hall — it's really cool."
Bostock is also eager for the community to come out to the arena at 10 a.m. Saturday for the second annual figure skating show, featuring 21 young skaters between the ages of 7 and 13. "It should be really good," she said. "The girls are looking forward to it. This year we're having movie-themed music, with lots of glitter and glamour."
That will be followed by the Termite hockey mini-tournament, featuring 5- and 6-year-olds. "Termite hockey is always fun," Bostock added. "They're adorable!"
Other events include the popular family toboggan night in King George Park on Thursday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., followed by the Westmount Après-Ski Casino, where adults are invited to the Lodge Room in Victoria Hall for some roulette, blackjack, Texas hold 'em and more, beginning at 8 p.m. Jazz trio Under the Three and Team Burlesque will entertain the crowd. Tickets are $15, which includes gaming chips, snacks and a chance to win door prizes. A cash bar will provide a variety of refreshments.
The Carnival winds up on Saturday, Feb. 6, with activities scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2:30 pm., in the arena and Westmount Park. Aside from the figure skating show and Termite hockey tournament, there will be sleigh rides, a sugar shack, face painting, a puck-shooting contest, races and of course hot dogs — all free of charge.
