Trent takes oath of office — again
After an eight-year absence, Mayor Peter Trent made his official return to municipal politics last Thursday during a brief swearing-in ceremony at city hall.
City Clerk Mario Gerbeau administered the oath of office to Trent, as well as city councillors Patrick Martin and Victor Drury — the three candidates declared elected by acclamation at the Oct. 2 nomination deadline.
This will be Trent's fourth term as mayor; his third term was cut short by the municipal mergers in 2001. Karin Marks, who was on hand Thursday to pass on the chain of office to the man who is both her predecessor and successor, served four years as borough mayor under the megacity and another four as mayor of the reconstituted Westmount.
Patrick Martin is returning for his second term as city councillor for District 1, and Victor Drury will be serving his first term as councillor for District 3.
Trent's first public appearance as mayor came on Monday night, when he, Martin and Drury spoke briefly at the outset of the Meet the Candidates evening in Victoria Hall.
