Dramatis Personae prepares to perform with a southern accent

Dramatis Personae, Westmount's local theatre troupe, is all set for the June 12 premier of its latest production — Edward Albee's 'The Ballad of the Sad Café', a story that takes place in a small Georgia town in the 1930s.
“I love the story because it's a love story and at the same time it's a very unusual love story,” said the group's director, Jacqueline van de Geer.
The play, adapted from Carson McCullers's novella of the same name, tells the story of a love triangle between Miss Amelia Evans, Marvin Macy, and cousin Lymon.
“I am the rich lady in town,” said Ellen Rubin talking about her character Miss Amelia. “But I'm not much of a lady, I'm pretty tough,” she said.
Malcolm McRay plays Marvin Macy, a name that rhymes with trouble. “I'm in love with Miss Amelia, and I was always the town bad boy getting into trouble,” said McRay.
But Marvin Macy is not the only man in Miss Amelia's life, and cousin Lymon will definitely spice things up. “I'm there to take advantage of her and throughout the story I give her the impression that I have a certain affinity for her,” said Edward Wong, who plays cousin Lymon.
This is van de Geer's second production with the group, and her first time directing them in a play that does not necessarily give equal stage time to all participants. “Last year we did 'Arrivals and Departures', which was more a play that had several scenes on an airport, but not really a coherent story," she said. "So everybody had the same amount of lines, the same amount of time on stage, very democratic."
Dramatis Personae, which has entertained Westmounters for over 20 years, will perform at Westmount Park Church on June 12 at 8 p.m. and June 13 and 14 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
