Police crack down on traffic, pedestrian violations
Westmount residents should be ready for a series of police operations in the coming months, as stations across Montreal crack down on errant behaviour.
"We can't be everywhere all the time, so we focus almost like a blitz on a campaign where every officer targets one behaviour," said Station 12 constable Adalbert Pimentel.
"When there are tickets given, people remember quite quickly. It's to remind people of security habits and common courtesy."
Until April 10, police are focusing on keeping drivers from using their cell phones behind the wheel. From April 11 to the 24, they will be cracking down on speeding. From April 25 to May 22, the police will be making sure vehicles, bikes and pedestrians share the road and play by the rules.
In Montreal, jay-walking has become an art, Pimentel said. "Fatalities and injuries can be avoided by good habits, but it's not only pedestrians we're targeting."
The police will be making sure everyone follows traffic rules to avoid unnecessary accidents. Last year, 18 pedestrians were killed in the Montreal area.
"It's not about making money from tickets — no," Pimentel said. "It's a problem."
Finally, from May 23 to June 5, police will keep their eyes on commercial traffic in Westmount, from delivery vans to taxi drivers.
"They'll focus their operations mostly on major intersections," Pimentel says, "but they could stop drivers, cyclists and pedestrians throughout the city for any traffic infractions at any time."
