Library kicks off the new year with a full slate of activities
The New Year is brimming with activity for the Westmount Library. The first months of 2009 will see both the return of long-standing favourite library programs, and special new events. Book clubs, movies, and games highlight the slate of programs scheduled for January.
The Readers to Readers Book Club will meet at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 13. There are no set texts for this club; instead, attendees go around the table, discussing books they’ve recently read.
The Teen Book Club, which meets on Jan. 15 at 4 p.m., follows the same format. It is aimed at readers 13 and older, and counts as community service credits for school requirements. In addition to talking about books, club attendees can also write about their favourite books, and have those writings posted on the Library web page.
On Tuesday, Jan. 20, the English Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. to discuss Moral Disorder by Margaret Atwood, a collection of linked short stories. The discussion will be led by club member Joyce Macnamara. The next day, Wednesday, Jan. 21, the French Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Marie-Anne Poggi will lead a discussion about Indian authors.
See Warhol on film
The Library will host several different film-oriented events in January. At 2 p.m. on Jan. 14, the Library will present Andy Warhol on Film, a retrospective of the pop artist’s life and career. The film is free, but those interesting in attending should register ahead of time at the circulation desk.
The Library’s Film Fridays continue on Jan. 30, at 7 p.m., with a presentation of director Nic Balthazar’s Ben X. The film depicts the life of an autistic teenager, bullied at school, who becomes absorbed by online role-playing games. The film won the Grand Prix des Amériques at the 2007 Montreal World Film Festival, along with the Most Popular Film award and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury.
Finally, the Library is hosting a special movie night for the Friends of the Westmount Library. The event is a chance for the volunteers to meet each other, and share their enthusiasm for books and libraries. The Library is keeping the title of the movie to be shown a secret, but notes that critics have described the film as “A delightful champagne cocktail of a movie.”
The Library will also host several events sponsored by various local associations. On Jan. 22, Art Now, a group dedicated to discussion of contemporary art, will meet in the Westmount Room. On Jan. 27, the Philatelic Club will meet; on Jan. 29, the Jung Society; and on Feb. 5, the Bimetallic Question — the local Sherlock Holmes society. These meetings are open to the public.
On Saturday, Jan. 31, the Library will present a special Family Games Night. The games will begin at 7 p.m., after regular library hours. Various games will available for play in the Westmount Room and throughout the library, along with refreshments. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own games. Players will be able to wander from game to game as they like. Game players will also want to note that the Library’s Chess and Scrabble Club meets on Jan. 9 and Jan. 16 at 2 p.m.
Finally, January will also see a major overhaul of the Library’s web site. The site, at westlib.org, will be revamped to feature a more interactive design. As always, the site will include complete access to the Library’s catalogue, and present full information on upcoming events at the Library as they draw near.
