Garneau presents essay awards
By Stanley Baker
Federal Liberal candidate Marc Garneau will be on hand next Monday at St. Matthias' Church to present awards to the local winners of the Royal Commonwealth Society's annual essay competition.
Westmount private schools have traditionally made a strong showing in entries for the competition, organized by the Montreal Branch of the Royal Commonwealth Society.
The Montreal Branch runs the competition in schools throughout Quebec, presents awards to the winners at the provincial level, then sends all the essays to London, where they compete in the world-wide competition with other Commonwealth countries.
This year Quebec received 156 entries, which is down slightly from last year's 177. In previous years, entries often numbered closer to 300.
On May 5, between 6 and 7 p.m., this year's awards will be presented by Garneau at St. Matthias' Church, on Cote St. Antoine Road at Church Hill.
