With the snow almost all melted away and the start of the gardening season upon us, the Westmount Horticultural Society (WHS) has announced the lineup of events and popular guest speakers at its monthly meetings for the remainder of the year.
It all gets underway on May 13, when Ken Taylor of Windmill Point Organic Nursery will talk to members about 'Growing Green or Planet-Saving Plants'.
Then, on June 10 the WHS celebrates its 10th anniversary with a special dedication ceremony. The Westmount Public Library will be presented with a birdbath to be permanently installed in the children’s corner of the garden. This dedication ceremony will be followed by a tour of the Westmount Greenhouses by City of Westmount gardeners.
During the summer months, the WHS organizes garden tours for its members. In June, the society is organizing a garden tour to some of the best gardens of Hudson. This will be followed in July by a tour of some magnificent Eastern Townships gardens.
Monthly meetings will resume in September, with a presentation by Dennis D’Etchevery of Flore, a Westmount flower shop. In October, Daniel Reid will speak about Montreal’s Community Garden Program. Nicholas Hoare will speak about gardening books for holiday giving in November, and in December, the WHS will host a holiday party for members.
The WHS's monthly meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month (with the exception of July and August), in the Westmount Room of the Westmount Public Library, 4574 Sherbrooke St. W. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and coffee and home-made cookies are served. An annual membership may be purchased at the door prior to any meeting. Alternatively, it is possible to attend meetings by paying a guest fee. Membership is not restricted to Westmount residents. Meetings are conducted in English.
The Westmount Horticultural Society is a non-profit association which fosters, studies, and encourages horticulture. Anyone with an interest in plants and gardening is welcome. Members have the opportunity to participate in field trips, community activities, as well as occasional workshops. In addition, members enjoy discounts at some great stores around town.
