Shaar presents Israel@60 gala concert
When Shaar Hashomayim’s director of music Stephen Glass discusses the synagogue’s upcoming concert, a community-wide musical and multimedia celebration of Israel’s 60th anniversary, one can’t remain passive in the face of his enthusiasm.
“This event is shaping up to be truly extraordinary. The music is amazing and the video footage is stunning. With the combined forces of full orchestra, adult and children’s voices and guests soloists, it’s going to be an unforgettable evening,” Glass says.
Glass is building on the success of a concert held in November 2006, marking the 160th Anniversary of the Congregation, which is still talked about today. This event was chaired by community leader Marvin Corber, FCA, and his daughter Deborah Corber, who heads the synagogue’s music committee.
“Our concert will recount the story of the Land of Israel from biblical times to the present day, focusing on numerous milestone historical events.
These include the dramatic UN vote on partition, the 1948 Declaration of Independence and the raid on Entebbe, all illustrated with stunning film
footage. The evening will be filled with a wide variety of music, designed
to appeal to all tastes.”
Israel @60, also chaired by the Corbers, will take place on Sunday May 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Shaar Hashomayim’s main sanctuary. The concert is already generating much buzz.
Tickets are available at the Shaar’s main office, 450 Kensington Ave. Cost is $180 for patrons, which includes a petite souper at 6 p.m., valet parking and premier seating; $72 for reserved seating; $36 for general admission. Everyone is invited to attend, regardless of affiliation. Net proceeds from sales will benefit One Family Fund, which assists the victims of terrorism in Israel.
