The Westmount Examiner has been recognized for excellence in opinion writing and its editorial pages by the Quebec Community Newspaper Association.
Last week the QCNA released the shortlist of finalists for its annual Better Newspaper Awards, to be presented at the association's annual gala May 23 — and as usual, Transcontinental Media's English-language weekly newspapers in western Montreal will be well represented.
Examiner editor Wayne Larsen's Commentary column has been nominated in the Best Column Writing category, while the Examiner and the West Island Chronicle will face off in the Best Editorial Page category.
The West Island Chronicle will compete for Best Overall Newspaper with the Gaspe Spec and the Low Down to Hull & Back News. The West Island Chronicle is also a finalist in the Best Special Section category, as well in the Best Website category
In the writers' competition, West End Chronicle editor Toula Foscolos is a finalist in two categories, Best Editorial (local affairs) and Best Column Writing. West Island Chronicle staff reporter Raffy Boudjikanian is a finalist in the Best Headline Writing category, and freelance reporter Hollie Watson is a finalist in the Best Arts and Entertainment Story category. Finally, former West Island Chronicle staff reporter Andy Blatchford is a finalist in the Best Education Story category, and West Island Chronicle and West End Chronicle cartoonist Stan Roach also garnered a nod in the Best Editorial Cartoon category.
