Carmel Trio marks Israel’s 60th with Shaar concert
Congregation Shaar Hashomayim is preparing for what is expected to be one of the musical highlights of the year — the visit of the world-renowned Carmel Trio next Wednesday.
"The calibre of the performers and their choice of repertoire will provide a truly varied evening of first-rate classical music," said Stephen Glass, the synagogue's director of music. "We're also delighted that the concert is open to the public at no charge.”
Comprised of Eyal Ein-Habar on flute, Dudu Carmel on oboe and Stephan Sylvestre on piano, the Carmel Trio has been attracting critical and popular acclaim everywhere they perform.
In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel, the trio will perform a selection of works that includes Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Trio Sonata in A Minor, Ernst Bloch’s Suite Modal for Flute and Piano, Shlomo Yoffe’s Dialogue for Flute and Oboe, Audrey Rubtsov’s Marbella Fantasy for Flute, Oboe and Piano, Felix Mendelssohn’s Three Songs Without Words for Oboe and Piano, Paul Ben-Haim’s Three Songs without Words for Oboe and Piano, Yoav Talmi’s Suite of Israeli Songs for Flute and Piano and Franz Doppler’s La Sonnambula, Op 42.
Most notable is that the performers at this concert are of world-class caliber. Carmel is a first chair player of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, a winner of the 1996 international oboe competition in Toulon, France. In 2004, he soloed with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra and with I Musici de Montreal. Ein-Habar has been a first chair player with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra since 1997 and has soloed with them under the baton of the renowned Zubin Mehta. He is a winner of the 1992 Scheveningen International Flute Competition in Holland and a prize winner at Japan’s 1993 Kobe International Flute Competition. Sylvestre ranks among the most gifted Canadian pianists of the new generation, boasting a versatile career as a recitalist, orchestra soloist and chamber musician. He is the winner of numerous awards, including: the Canadian Music Competition, Montreal Symphony Orchestra Competition, Prix d’Europe, Canadian Music Centre Special Prize, du Maurier Grand Prix, Pro Musica Excellence Award and has twice received the Artist of the Year Prize from Jeunesses Musicales of Canada.
