OTTAWA - A steel company in Stittsville, Ont., has been fined $130,000 for the death of a worker who was crushed by more than 1,000 kilograms of steel.
Excelcon Steel Co. Ltd. pleaded guilty in an Ottawa court to a violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for the incident on Nov. 15, 2006.
An employee was pushing a cart with two steel columns when they rolled off the cart and crushed the worker.
Each column was about seven metres long and weighed about 590 kilograms.
A Labour Ministry investigation found the cart system was not equipped with any mechanisms to prevent the columns from rolling off.
