SURREY, B.C. - The RCMP dispelled rumours Monday that the murder of a 14-year-old B.C. boy in February was an extreme case of school bullying, announcing charges against three teens and a young man.
Two girls, aged 15 and 16, and an 18-year-old male, who was 17 at the time, are charged with second-degree murder in the death of Justin Vasey.
Cody Allan Pelletier, 20, of Vancouver is charged with manslaughter.
The names of the three teens, who are also from Vancouver, are banned from publication under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Vasey's body was discovered outside an abandoned house in suburban Surrey on Feb. 25 after police were called to investigate suspicious activity. He had been stabbed.
There was initial speculation, largely stemming from posts on Facebook, that the killing was linked to school bullying but RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr said investigators have since ruled that out.
"Quite frankly, it (the speculation) was solely by the public and the media," Carr said in an interview Monday.
"We didn't find any link to bullying on this particular case. Justin, seemingly at his own free will, met with what he thought were a group of new friends for the purpose of partying and hanging out and they started to shove and punch and assault Justin."
Carr noted that none of the four accused attended school with Vasey, or even attended school in Surrey.
He said Vasey had only recently met the group, though he said there was no indication that the 14-year-old was lured to the house for a planned attack.
Carr said police had been called to the run-down house before, typically for incidents involving alcohol.
The four accused were all scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
