MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - A 41-year-old man from Mississauga, Ont., has been charged for allegedly recruiting young people for a fake hockey school.
Peel Regional Police say the suspect got more than $100,000 in tuition and related fees from potential students.
Investigators say in March 2007, the man created websites describing an elite private hockey school called Walton Gates Academy and a league named the Canadian Junior Elite Hockey League.
Over the next several months, police say he recruited players from the United States and Australia to attend the fake school in Brampton, Ont.
Police say the man gave tours of various arenas and community colleges to his victims, presenting them as school and league arenas.
Randy Gumbley was charged with 10 counts of fraud over $5,000 and defraud the public.
