Alberta reserve hit hard by gang violence intent on enforcing youth curfew

HOBBEMA, Alta. - An Alberta First Nation hit hard by gang violence says it is intent on enforcing a curfew for young people.
Chief Marvin Yellowbird of the Samson Cree at Hobbema says the band is determined to implement stronger measures to protect residents and reduce crime.
Violence on the four reserves that make up the Samson Cree has been a fact of life for years.
But residents finally said enough is enough when a 23-month-old girl was wounded earlier this month in a drive-by shooting.
The 10:00 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew prohibits all young people - not just residents - between 12 and 17 from being in a public place unless they have a legitimate reason.
Anyone who violates the curfew will be held by the RCMP and will face a fine or jail time, although warnings will be issued in some cases.
