WINNIPEG - Manitoba's NDP government is proposing fixed election dates and partial public campaign financing to make provincial politics more fair.
Premier Gary Doer says the reforms, including the registration and disclosure of lobbyists, would also make politics more transparent and accessible to the public.
Under the proposed legislation provincial elections would be held every four years on the second Tuesday in June.
The public campaign financing proposal calls for all eligible political parties to receive $1.25 per vote up to a maximum of $250,000 to help cover costs.
Manitoba has already banned political campaign contributions from unions and corporations.
The new rules would require lobbyists to disclose their techniques and the government departments they intend to lobby.
