Dump truck drivers plan rolling protest on Toronto highways over safety, wages

TORONTO - About 150 dump trucks are scheduled to stage a rolling protest later Thursday on the major highways encircling Toronto.
The Ontario Dump Truck Association says the protest will begin after the morning rush hour at about 10 a.m. and last two to three hours. Drivers are upset over safety issues such as overloaded trucks and say they are often forced to carry far more than they should.
The association says wages are another key issue and that drivers haven't seen an increase in five years.
Spokesman Harsimran Gill says drivers have to pay the higher prices for fuel, repairs and insurance out of their own pockets.
One driver says riding gas prices means it now costs about $500 to fill a dump truck instead of the usual $300.
