CALGARY - A Calgary man who told psychiatrists that he hears magical voices in his head has been found not criminally responsible for the fatal stabbing of his cousin.
Justice Beth Hughes ruled Friday that she accepts the testimony of two psychiatrists who examined Aminullah Ali. The doctors testified that the 28-year-old man was suffering from severe schizophrenia when his cousin, Shafi Iqbalzada, was killed in March 2005, and that he continues to suffer from mental illness.
They said Ali told them he acted under the direction of people who control his thoughts and actions.
Hughes also says she accepts the observations of nursing staff where Ali is being held that rules out the possibility he is faking his illness.
Ali will now be sent to Alberta Hospital in Edmonton where he will be kept until doctors determine he is no longer a danger to the public.
