WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court says it can't intervene in an important dispute over the rights of apartheid victims to sue American corporations in U.S. courts.
The reason is that four of the nine justices had to sit out the case over apparent conflicts. U.S. law demands that at least six justices hear any case before the top court.
The result is that a lawsuit can now proceed against some of the most prominent companies in the United States.
They are accused of violating international law by assisting South Africa's former apartheid government.
