Declining enrolment forces layoffs at central Ontario school board

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - Falling enrolment has led to teacher layoffs at the Peterborough-Victoria-Northumberland and Clarington District Catholic school board.
The board issued layoff notices to 24 teachers Wednesday after saying enrolment would be down by more than 400 students next September.
Fewer students also forced the Kawartha Pine-Ridge Public Board to announce up to 85 layoffs last month.
Toronto school board trustees also approved a plan recently which could mean the closing of some schools with low enrolment.
More than half of the city's more than 500 schools are under-attended to the point they don't qualify for provincial funding.
Schools don't get full funding unless they are at least 80 per cent full.
