NEWMARKET, Ont. - The Ontario SPCA will send a team to Fort Albany, Ont., to evacuate pets left behind due to rising floodwaters.
About 90 residents of the town on the shore of James Bay have settled into temporary home at a Thunder Bay hotel. They are not expected to return home until at least Monday because no planes are expected to be available until then.
The SPCA says they an estimated 60 dogs were left behind and may need to be evacuated after they are assessed and cared for.
In 2006, the Ontario SPCA evacuated about 120 dogs and other pets from nearby Kashechewan when floodwaters threatened that community.
About four dozen Kashechewan residents who were flown to the Stratford area returned home Wednesday.
