EDMONTON - A year-long investigation into an alleged extortion ring believed to be behind several arsons has resulted in charges against three men.
Police say a fourth man is believed to be on the run in the United States and a fifth person of interest has been identified.
Two homes in Edmonton and another in Pigeon Lake south of the city were deliberately destroyed by fires last year.
Two of the homes were owned by the same person.
Police say the fires were part of a plan to extort money to influence the way businesses were being run.
Staff Sgt. Stewart Callioux says the victims were threatened by men who used intimidation, fear and violence.
Callioux says the case appears to have started as a disagreement between two people over a civil matter, but grew to include their families.
"It progressed beyond a direct threat to...even children (being) involved, which is very disturbing," he said Wednesday.
Police believe there are other victims who are too afraid to come forward.
Jonathan David Meer, 46, faces several charges, including extortion and arson with disregard for human life.
Dustin Patrick Pisesky, 26, and Nicholas James Radloff, 25, face similar charges.
Police have issued a warrant for 23-year-old Christopher David Meer.
