CALGARY - A 42-year-old woman has been killed after a group of pedestrians walking on a sidewalk in a residential neighbourhood were hit by a car.
Police say they suspect drunk driving as the cause of the collision, which happened about 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday. Calgary Emergency Medical Services says a 15-year-old boy in a wheelchair suffered non-life-threatening head and leg injuries.
A 30-year-old woman was transported to Foothills Hospital in serious, non-life threatening condition with injuries to her arm, leg, and abdomen.
An eight-year-old girl was unharmed in the incident.
Witnesses say the car that hit the group fled the scene but some of them followed and led police to a nearby home, where a male was arrested.
"We just started driving," said Sean Colville, one of those who pursued the fleeing vehicle. "I figured it had to have been a damaged vehicle. The next thing you know, we caught up with some people who thought he was in one of the houses, which was the house where I caught him at."
Insp. Keith Pollock thanked the bystanders, saying they helped care for the injured people and put police on the right track in apprehending a suspect.
