CARDRONA, New Zealand - Crispin Lipscomb of Whistler, B.C., opened his World Cup snowboard season with a bronze medal in the men's halfpipe Sunday.
The podium performance was the second straight for Lipscomb, who won gold at last season's finale in Valmalenco, Italy.
The 29-year-old earned scores of 44.6 and 42.7 points on his two runs.
"I know I can get better but I got good marks from the judges," said Lipscomb who worked for nine years in Cardrona as a snowboard instructor. "It augurs well for my training and gives me confidence."
Winning the halfpipe World Cup season title is one of his main goals for 2008-09.
"I've had good results here," he said. "I will compete in six halfpipe events. We'll see what happens."
Kohhei Kudoh led Japan to a 1-2 finish with 48.9 points followed by Ryoh Aono in second at 47.6.
Ryan Rausch of Whistler finished 11th, while Justin Lamoureux of B.C., was 19th and Quebec's Hugo Lemay finished 30th.
The next World Cup halfpipe events are Oct. 30-31 in Saas-Fee, Switzerland.
