Miscommunication, high seas hampered response into fatal N.L. sinking: report

A military review into a tugboat sinking that killed two Newfoundlanders has found the response into the tragedy was hampered by water-laden survival suits, rough seas and miscommunication.
The National Defence report into the sinking of the Check-Mate III also found that the search mission co-ordinator was interrupted by calls from the news media.
The 12-metre tug went down Feb. 1 in Trinity Bay off the province's east coast, killing Christopher Oram and Larry Parsons, who was the mayor of Lumsden.
The two men were transporting the tugboat to St. John's when it suddenly took on water and they had to abandon ship.
A Cormorant helicopter was first on the scene, but rescue officials decided instead to have a nearby coast guard ship try to rescue the men 22 minutes later.
Officials with National Defence declined to release the report until Friday, but CBC obtained it through access-to-information legislation and posted it online.
