Alberta doctors support proposed ban on cellphone use while driving

EDMONTON - Alberta doctors say it's time for people to hang up their cellphones when they are behind the wheel.
The Alberta Medical Association says it's throwing its support behind a private member's bill in the legislature that calls for a ban on the use of cellphones and other devices.
The bill - introduced last spring by a Progressive Conservative backbencher - is being reviewed by a committee of the legislature.
Association president, Dr. Darryl LaBuick, says there is clear scientific evidence that using a cellphone while driving increases the chance of serious road crashes by up to six times.
Studies also indicate cellphone use behind the wheel slows the reaction time of drivers and increases the likelihood of failing to stop at stop signs.
Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland already have legislation that restricts driving and hand-held cellphone use.
