SASKATOON - Saskatchewan's chief coroner says an inquest called two years ago into the death of a man killed by the RCMP will finally start next month.
Delbert Kenneth Pelletier, 44, was shot Nov. 13, 2006 following an eight-hour standoff on a reserve southeast of Saskatoon.
At the time, the Mounties said Pelletier first fired a gun from inside a home on the Muskowekwan First Nation, then came out and shot at police again before he was killed.
The inquest into Pelletier's death is scheduled to start June 2 at the community's bingo hall and will last four days.
An inquest can determine the circumstances of a person's death and a coroner's jury can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths in the future.
When the inquest was ordered, the coroner's office said it would wait for the police investigation to wrap up before going ahead with the probe.
