Toronto firefighter killed while driving to second job as part-time medic

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - A Toronto firefighter driving to his second job as a part-time medic in Peterborough, Ont., has died in a traffic accident.
Steve Van Hemme died Wednesday when his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck backing onto a street. Van Hemme was 37, a firefighters for eight years in Toronto, and the married father of a five-month old girl.
The crash happened only about five blocks away from the Peterborough EMS headquarters.
The Toronto Fire Department and Peterborough EMS are expected to hold a joint funeral service for Van Hemme next week.
