Governments announce new 'busway' for York University in advance of subway

TORONTO - Construction of a new subway link to York University is still yet to break ground, but students will see an improvement to surface transportation by fall 2009.
Federal, provincial and municipal politicians gathered Thursday to announce a new "busway" to service the campus in northwest Toronto.
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Ottawa will contribute $9.7 million for the link between his alma mater and a nearby subway station.
The so-called busway will use existing High Occupancy Vehicle traffic lanes on some streets but will also incorporate new bus-only routes constructed through a hydro corridor as well as on York University lands.
Flaherty says the Spadina subway extension will take time so the new dedicated bus lanes are a "practical and efficient" interim solution.
Toronto is contributing $18.4 million to the busway and the transit commission will draw on previous provincial funding to kick in $9.7 million.
