Westmount's newest centenarian
By Marilynn Vanderstay
There is going to be a party this Saturday at Place Kensington as family from England, the United States and Ontario gather with Montreal family members and residents in the auditorium to celebrate the 100th birthday of resident Anna Weisbord Tencer.
Daughters-in-law Beverly and Glynis, and granddaughter Erica have been busy for months planning festivities that in addition to traditional party fare will include presentations of certificates in recognition of the centenary from Prime Minister Harper, the City of Westmount, and the province of New Brunswick. There will also be special music by Robin Chemkov and a very special video.
Erica and her cousin Marcus Weiss from California have prepared a documentary of Weisbord Tencer’s life that includes photographs of her 50-plus years with her husband Morris Tencer and their three sons David, Jack Alan.
And what a life!
Weisbord Tencer was born in the Ukraine on March 20 1907. She came to Canada via Halifax when she was as a young adult. She stayed in Montreal, but a few years later her parents continued on to New York City and the young woman in her mid-20s had to find her own way.
When she was 32 she met and married Morris who owned and operated LaSalle Shoes.
The couple raised their family in Outremont and today she is the proud grandmother of five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Grandson Kenneth will say a few words on behalf of the family at the party.
Today Weisbord Tencer is an active participant in the Place Kensington community where she has been a resident for seven years. She has been a member of the watercolour class and is presently taking a computer course.
“Anne has been a wonderful mother in law has a wonderful sense of humour. She really enjoys her life,” said Beverly.
