Dick Pound to speak at annual St. Patrick’s Society luncheon
Westmounter Dick Pound will be the guest speaker for the 2007 St. Patrick’s Society annual luncheon tomorrow, March 16.
Pound, who turns 65 on March 22, is an Officer of both the Order of Canada and the National Order of Quebec, and continues to manage several careers. He has been Chancellor of McGill University since 1999, is a partner in the law firm of Stikeman Elliott, and has authored books including a history of the law firm and his most recent, Inside Dope, in addition to his work as chair of the World Anti-Doping Agency.
Queen of the United Irish Society, Westmount resident Andrea McGlynn, will be present at the luncheon, and Lynn Lonergan Doyle, the Society’s first woman president, will be presented with one the Society’s the prestigious Community Award. Lonergan Doyle is receiving the award in recognition of her extensive work for the Society and beyond, and especially for her work with the Cine Gael, through which the Society has shown many films over the years.

Baker’s Himalayan adventure
Westmount’s man about town and world traveler Stanley Baker will be warming up the Westmount Room at the Westmount Public Library on Wednesday, March 28 with a presentation for the Arm Chair Travelers of the Two O’clock Series, entitled Himalayan Adventure.
The presentation includes a video and a talk that features Baker’s tour of remote destinations in India, Sikkin, Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet, which he made in 2000. It takes viewers from Delhi to the holy city of Lhasa at the roof of the world.
While videoing the tour, Baker made a detailed narrative of the sites including their history, the people’s ways of life and his personal experiences en route. As always, Baker’s travelogue will be both informative and entertaining ending with a lively question and answer time. Admission is free but seating is limited.

In other Rotary news, the Rotary Club de Vieux Montreal celebrates 15th anniversary with annual fundraising gala
In addition to hosting their own weekly meetings, Rotary clubs work together to encourage each other’s activities and events. A member from any chapter is welcome any time to participate in a meeting wherever they are in the world. Members of the Rotary Club de Vieux Montreal meet Fridays for lunch in the Holiday Inn Select, 99 Viger Ave. W. A small club of about 30 members, president Peter Wong says their members represent 17 different countries of origin.
The Club is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a gala this Saturday, March 17, at the Holiday Inn Select at 6:15 p.m. The honourary chairman will be Duarte M. da Ponte Miranda, vice-president of international commerce for RBC international services.

Doll maker to visit quilters
Westmount doll maker Amy Felske will be showing her dolls at the next meeting of the Westmount Quilters Guild, Thursday March 22 at 7 p.m. at Victoria Hall, 4626 Sherbrooke St. W. CAA offers learning opportunities
The Canadian Authors Association will be hosting three learning opportunities for writers and aspiring writers this spring.
Ken Kalman will give a presentation on the techniques of writing historical fiction next Wednesday, March 22 at 6:45 p.m. at the Westmount Library, 4574 Sherbrooke Street West.
Then on April 2 members and guests themselves will have the opportunity to be the writers during an evening of readings and feedback starting at 6:45 p.m. in the Westmount Library. Participants are encouraged to bring something they can read and share with the group.
The highlight of the events will be a creative writing workshop on Saturday April 28 from 10:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the board room at the Westmount Library. Author Steven Manners will be the guest lecturer. The cost is $25 for members and $45 for non-members.
