After dealing successfully with two significant rain storms accompanied by high winds and freezing rain during the Christmas holiday period, Hydro Westmount is asking residents to conserve energy during the rest of the winter should there be any cold snaps.
Management at the City's electrical utility was pleased to report recently that there were no significant problems on the power grid, with only a few minor situations. Now, however, residents are being asked to pay attention to the '-18 C' signs that are placed throughout Westmount when very cold weather is forecast.
During this time, reducing electricity consumption, especially during the morning and evening peak periods, will help keep the hydro grid stable, reduce the risk of power interruptions and help reduce severe financial penalties that Hydro Quebec imposes when local consumption soars.
According to the City, Hydro Westmount has been penalized up to $250,000 in a single evening when peak consumption reached record levels during a cold snap.
"Every little bit of conservation will contribute to reducing these significant penalties," says Director General Bruce St. Louis. Additional information on this issue is available on the City's web site at
