Selwyn House scores big at Ed Meagher tournament

Selwyn House sports have had a great start to 2007, winning two local basketball tournaments and placing well in hockey along the way.
On the weekend of Jan. 26-28, both the elementary and high school midget teams were gold medalists at tournaments in the NDG area.
First up, Selwyn played Howard S. Billings High School Friday evening at Loyola High School’s Ed Meagher tourney, winning 68-41.
“The team got its running game in gear, scoring many of its points on fast breaks by Oliver Maurovich,” said midget Colin Boyle.
“The guards also moved the ball effectively inside to the forwards. Bryan Gorski was the main beneficiary of this ball movement, scoring 12 points. Our team dominated the boards, pulling an amazing 58 rebounds in the game.”
Kevin Paul was chosen player of the game.
The finals were played on Saturday night at the Concordia University gym in front of over 200 spectators. Selwyn House came in as the underdog, having lost to Loyola in league play in December by 36 points.
Led by point guard Paul, however, the Gryphons never trailed. He scored 21 points, including landing four three-point shots, and also hauled in a team-leading 10 rebounds.
Jack Melkerson was named Player of the Game, shooting five for six from the floor, including two three-pointers. He was also instrumental in neutralizing talented Loyola point guard Jared Humphrey.
Ryan Egger dominated the boards and played stellar defense against Loyola star Vokaty.
“The team showed a lot of composure in a high-profile tournament final, and, more importantly, demonstrated the importance of unselfish teamwork and playing defense with high intensity,” said Boyle.
While the high school kids were taking home the Meagher title, the elementary schoolers were working on their own win at LCC, coming in tops at the seven-team competition.
Selwyn played five games on its way to the top, starting with a 44-30 win over Crescent School from Toronto, followed by a 46-31 defeat of Royal St. George’s College.
On Saturday, the Gryphons nearly doubled The Priory 54-28, moving on to trounce Kuper Academy 50-19 in the semi-final.
The final was another strong victory for Selwyn House, who defeated Upper Canada College 40-24.
“It was a great game,” said co-coach Julie Heath. “Until halftime it was very close. We were actually down 20-16 at halftime.
“Our boys really pulled away in the second half, however, with UCC only scoring two baskets.”
Kevin Ward had 10 points and Noah Daoust had 16, with10 rebounds in the final
Daoust also won the speed-shooting competition for the A team division while Selwyn’s Trevor Chistolini made it to the finals in the B team shooting contest.
The Selwyn House B team won five games to go undefeated and take the title in the LCC B team Jamboree on Saturday. The B team also played in the Kuper Jamboree on Wednesday, Jan. 31, winning all three games to take that tournament title as well.
