Students at The Study participate in a record-breaking reading of Charlotte's Web.
The Study crawls to a world record
By Noah Sidel
Elementary School students at The Study recently participated in a successful nation-wide attempt to break a Guinness World Record. They joined youngsters in schools, hospitals, libraries and community centres across Canada and the United States in the simultaneous reading of a passage from 'Charlotte’s Web'.
For those uninitiated to the book, the beloved children’s novel by E.B. White is the story of a small pig named Wilbur, who forges a special friendship with a spider named Charlotte.
According to Walden Media, the event’s official organizer, The Study was the only school in Quebec to participate. City of Westmount Public Security officers James Novak and Stephen Payne were present as official witnesses.
“The girls were all very excited about being involved in such a big worldwide challenge," said librarian Chantale St-Denis, who organized The Study's participation.
In all, 547,826 readers in 2,451 locations and 28 countries succeeded in breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest number of people reading the same piece of literature aloud, simultaneously, in multiple locations.
The previous record was set on March 19, 2004, when 155,528 students from 737 schools throughout the United Kingdom, read William Wordsworth’s poem, 'Daffodils'.
Also playing at The Study
The Study has also introduced Pattie Edwards as its new director of admissions. A member of the school’s staff for the past 19 years, and most recently the school’s registrar, Edwards is excited about her new responsibilities.
“I love welcoming people to The Study and seeing how very impressed they are that this little school is so dynamic, so spirited and so diverse, she said.
In addition to her regular tasks, which include meeting and touring prospective families and organizing the annual Open House and Admissions Week, she will also oversee all of the school’s marketing activities.
Selwyn does Toronto
The Selwyn House Gryphons elementary school basketball team returned from Toronto as the winner of the annual Under-12-Year-Old Basketball Tournament hosted by Upper Canada College on Jan. 12 and 13.
Sixteen public and private schools from Ontario and Quebec participated in the tournament. Montreal-area schools included The Priory, Kuper Academy, Lower Canada College and Selwyn House.
“In the finals the curtain opened up and we got to play on the full-length court, said co-coach Julie Heath.
“We ended up meeting Hillfield Strathallan again in the finals. It was a very exciting game – at halftime we were only winning 15-12. We started to pull away in the second half, making more of our shots, and playing great defence.
The game ended with a 39-27 win for Selwyn House.
