Mulroney Blows it Again
Brian Mulroney and Stephen Harper
Mulroney Blows it Again
Something happened Wednesday at the Mulroney-Schreiber inquiry that says a lot about Brian Mulroney.
For the past 10 years Mulroney has been crying out for a public inquiry so he can clear his name and get rid of those nasty rumors about the hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash he took from arms dealer Karlheinz Schreiber.

Finally his pal Stephen Harper gives him his inquiry and Mulroney shows up “with bells on” as he promised, ready to tell the world his own version of what really happened.

Mulroney takes the stand and with his lawyer Guy Pratte supplying questions, proves himself most eloquent in his testimony, how the federal government, the RCMP and the news media combined to destroy him and his family.

It is an emotional story, as only Mulroney can tell it. At one point Mulroney is almost in tears.

The kindly judge, Jeffrey Oliphant, calls for a noon-time break to give Mulroney time to compose himself.

At that moment Mulroney looks up and sees what he believes are two journalists laughing at the back of the hall.

Without checking it out, Mulroney concludes they were laughing at him.

Mulroney can’t resist. He tells his aides he saw two journalists laughing at him.

They crank out a news release denouncing two journalists. Immediately it becomes the story of the hour and for most of the afternoon – stealing the headlines from Mulroney.

Did the journalists laugh at him? Did they laugh at all? And if they laughed, was it at something else? Who knows? Who cares? The important thing should be Mulroney's tetimony.

One of the journalists, Harvey Cashore of the CBC, says he did not laugh at Mulroney, nor at anyone else. He adds there is nothing funny about what happened to Mulroney and his family.

Videotape, examined later, does not show anyone laughing.

Poor Mulroney, his hot temperament fuelled by his sense of persecution has overtaken news coverage of his own testimony. Once again he’s shot himself in the foot.

His big moment in the national press is ruined – by himself. He couldn’t focus on what was important for him – getting his version of the facts into the news media, instead of trying to milk another drop of sympathy from a national audience that cares more about what happened than whether one, two or a thousand journalists may have laughed at him.

Makes you think of the groom on the altar who suddenly spots two guys at the back of the church laughing at him and he drops everything to send his best man off to challenge the deadbeats.

Why ruin the big moment on the altar for something that can be settled later on?

And once again it’s Brian who pays the price, the architect of his misfortunes.

One more example of what journalists call – without laughter – the Mulroney tragedy.

"I remember Mulroney pointing into the air as if he were talking to throngs of listeners, but there were no balconies of adoring supporters..........." says Randy Ranson below. The full scenario was: Mulroney points to imaginary fans on imaginary balcony and waves, Mila looks up also, wrinkles nose ever so cutely, waves also, and they both glow and smile. The two of them pulled this trick repeatedly until news cameramen stopped the illusion by panning up to show a plain ceiling. Were Brian and Mila trying to fool Canadians with this act or were they just playing out their fantasy.

so deflective and his conduct is unbecoming of a Prime Minister..strains any character credibility that the public might have given him.... however, these events wouldn't have make it to the back pages of newspapers in Italy,a counrty that been called a "Beautiful Mess"

Must be a slow news day in Canada....Waste of Canadian Tax money.

If you and I had accepted $300,000 in cash in a hotel room, had hidden it for 5 years while under oath, had denied it, we would be jailed. Mulroney gets a media show, has a Swiss bank account with millions and cries to escape jail. Marc Lalonde who accepted hundreds of thousands is neither in jail nor in front of a bogus commission. Chretien is laughing as well. Oh what a banana republic. Mulroney had a credit card paid monthly by the CIBC...

I've watched all the enquiry so far and while impressed with enquiry counsel Wolson, I feel Mulroney has handled all the questions quite well. He's a smart man, and will one day be regarded as one of our finest prime miniters, while his critics, especially those in the media (which is most of the media) won't even make the footnotes. He shouldn't have taken cash, however, for his work for Schreiber, but that's more or less only a matter of optics.

What an insult this fiasco is to anyone whom has a sense of responsability and deciency. I can imagine the cringes on the faces of those whom had voted for this egomaniac back when. He has insulted the smart minds of all Canadians from all associated political parties from coast to coast. Way to go mr. Mulroney, You may get away with it but history shall be your judge and those people whom can and shall make a difference in improving our world as a whole shall remember that you crossed the line of honor to finally end up in a situation that truly portrays your true colors. Hollywood needs good actors and you have missed your calling.

He has tried to hide the truth in a manor that suited his needs and no-one else's...Anyone taking that amount of cash; whether it be $225,000.00 or $300,000.00 can't honestly say he didnot have a business relationship in play...come on Brian...what were you thinking...very sad EX- prime minister.....your family name is ruined not be others but by yourself and your actions....

Tired of this disgusting Mulroney garbage...
He is clearly a LIAR, a THIEF and in his own words, dealt with hundreds like Schreiber... did each one pay him $300,000 plus?? His closes aide calculated the commission on the Air Canada Purchase and arranged the ransom pick up (CASH) by the big thief himself!!!

He is a genius! Instead of people talking about the scandal we are talking about fluff! Brilliant - his legacy will live on now as a defiant take no bull kind of guy. Thanks for perpetuating the deceit.

A very defeated and sad man. To think that Mulroney when first installed as Prime Miunister, chastised, laughed and derided Pierre Elliot Trudeau a class act and Statesman with a conviction and dedication to Canada, that a lessor man like Mulroney could never fathom. I remember Mulroney's winning on election night, and my father saying to me, " Look at that, no one's on the stage with him, he wants all of the glory for himself." I remember Mulroney pointing into the air as if he were talking to throngs of listeners, but there were no balconies of adoring supporters as he imagined only his ego lost in the ether. He doesn't even deserve our pity.

Kinda like laughing at a funeral is excusable! Bad timing I say and an understanable reaction to folks who work for an organization who have hounded Mulroney for the past 15 years. I think we know the end of this movie. Mulroney is flogged in public one more time and found guilty of nothing more than bad judgement, Karlheim will go back to Germany to meet justice and tens of millions will be paid to several law firms!

While I am in no position to pass judgement I must put forward some questions;
1/ Is Mr. Mulroney not a lawyer?
2/ Can we not assume that a man who can get to be Prime Minister is quite intelligent?
3/ What would happen to me if I had delayed paying income tax on $225,000.00?

I know that I would be smart enough not to touch the cash. Why wouldn't a man with Mr. Mulroney's intelligence, experience and education see it the same way?

Today a transaction like that would have FINTRAC all over him, or at least me, if they knew about it.

Its time for him to fess up, be a man, take the consequences or else he will be like Ms Pelosi in the states, on lie after another until he buries himself

To say that Brian Mulroney is an embarrassment to himself and to the country is an understatement.
