From Earth to the stars
More than 300 people gathered at Westmount's Summit Lookout on Saturday night, March 28, to mark the global Earth Hour event. Some took advantage of the increased visibility, thanks to the darkened city below, to peer at the stars through telescopes provided and manned by volunteers from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Others exchanged an incandescent light bulb for a CFL, compliments of Hydro Westmount. It was a fun event for all, with lively music provided by the ad-hoc duo Bowser & Green, featuring George Bowser on guitar and Stan Grossman on harmonica, and everyone enjoyed refreshments donated by Turkey Hill Sugarbush Ltd. A shuttle bus made several trips between City Hall and the lookout, but many people walked up the mountain. Earth Hour was a success in Westmount, as the local utility reported a noticeable drop in electricity consumption between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m
