Five speakers featured at Temple human trafficking conference
The global problem of human trafficking will be front and centre at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom next Thursday evening, April 10, when the Temple's Committee Against Human Trafficking presents the conference 'Slavery in the 21st Century'.
Keynote speaker will be MP Joy Smith of Kildonan-St. Paul, Man., the leading Parliamentary voice in the fight against human trafficking and sexual slavery, who will speak on the topic 'Human Trafficking: Canada’s Response at Home and Abroad'.
Other topics will be 'In Modern Bondage: Working to Stop the Global Trade in Commercial Sexual Exploitation' with Dr. Laura Lederer of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, U.S. Department of State; 'What is a Modern Abolitionist?' with Norma Ramos, co-executive director of the Coalition Against Trafficking of Women International; 'When the Good Do Something: Countering Human Trafficking' with Rev. Jamie McIntosh, executive director of International Justice Mission Canada; and a discussion of the film 'Cargo: Innocence Lost' with the film's director, Michael Cory Davis. Questions and discussion will follow lectures, and simultaneous translation in French will be available.
The conference takes place on Thursday, April 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom, 4100 Sherbrooke St. W. The event is free and open to all. For more information, call 514-937-3575.
