Temple Emanu-El-Beth Sholom will be the scene of a three-day art event featuring the lives and works of several Jewish artists.
On Thursday, March 20, art historian Esther Trépanier will speak about Montreal Jewish artists and her book Jewish Painters of Montreal: Witnesses of Their Time 1930 – 1948. The event coincides with the current exhibition at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, which Trépanier curated.

There will be a small exhibition of works from private collections.

The talk begins at 7:30 p.m., and a small exhibition of work from private collectors will be on view starting at 7 p.m.

The exhibition will also be on view the following day after Purim celebrations.

On Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., Trépanier will moderate a roundtable discussion with artists, art historians and relatives of the artists. The exhibition will also be on view from 1 to 5 p.m.

The event is co-sponsored by Concordia University's Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies.

Lights out March 29

Westmount will be plunged into darkness — at least partially — between 8 and 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 29.

Many municipal buildings and private homes will turn off their lights for one hour that night to mark Earth Hour — a world-wide environmental effort to reduce energy and inspire people to take action on climate change, by sensitizing citizens around the world of the potentially disastrous consequences of global warming.

“Residents who would like to take part in this initiative are invited to turn off their lights, especially those on the outside facade, and reduce their electricity consumption,” Mayor Karin Marks said of the event. “It will also be an excellent opportunity for a pleasant evening stroll under the stars.”

Air cadets land at Place Kensington

Place Kensington Seniors Residence has formed a special relationship with the 1 West Montreal Squadron of the Air Cadets.

This partnership will involve visits of cadets to Place Kensington on such occasions as the Christmas holiday period, Mother's Day, Father's Day, formal Remembrance Day ceremonies and other special events.

Residents of Place Kensington will also be invited to attend some squadron events such as Commanding Officer parades, cadet promotion ceremonies, and mess dinners. Place Kensington will also sponsor an annual trophy to be presented to an outstanding air cadet.

Shown in the photo on this page are (from left to right) 1 West Montreal Squadron commanding officer Capt. Damien Kontopoulos, Place Kensington executive director Sylvia Zagury, and squadron sponsoring committee chair Della Robertson.

Beading workshop at ALCC

Ever wanted to own a classic piece of jewellery with that unique look of a by-gone era? If so, the Atwater Library and Computer Centre is hosting the first of three beading workshops next Thursday, March 20, at 1 p.m., with experts demonstrating how to make a 1940s-style necklace.

Kits with everything required to make this classic necklace will be on sale for $15 each. All proceeds from the sale of kits will go to the Atwater Library and Computer Centre to improve community programs.
