Atom A Wings end regular season in style
By Michael Somma
The Atom A Westmount Wings closed out a successful regular season with a 5-2 victory against the St. Laurent Sonics on Monday evening, helping them lock up one of the top three spots in the league.
The Wings dominated the game right from the beginning, at times hemming the Sonics in their zone for minutes at a time.

The win comes just four days after the Wings dealt the rival TMR Demons their first defeat of the season. While the victory won’t knock the Demons from top spot in the league, it did boost morale in the Wings’ dressing room.

Team captain Ryan Dimentberg called it “the most rewarding win of the season.”

Dimentberg prides himself as a leader on this strong team, encouraging his teammates with a positive attitude and strong work ethic. Praise for the young man isn’t hard to come by, as Head Coach Danny Filion commends him for his efforts in both games and practice. Westmount Sports Coordinator Steve Robaire refers to him as a “consummate sportsman,” a tribute to both his proficiency on the ice as well as his demeanor outside of the rink.

Another noteworthy performance was that of Jaklyn Levy, whose skating ability and hard shot made her stand out. Don’t let the pink gloves fool you, she’s anything but delicate and says she has no problem playing with the boys. Given her abilities, that shouldn’t be surprising.

Goaltender Zachary Filion was another bright spot for the Wings all season. He narrowly missed out on his seventh shut out when the Sonics scored with just under a minute to play. They added another in the final seconds, but by that time the game was out of reach. Filion was solid when he needed to be, coming across to make a couple of nice saves when the game was still in question.

He’s looking forward to the team’s upcoming trip to Cape Ann, which coincides neatly with their three-week break before the playoffs. Of particular interest to the young netminder is the state of the American facilities. He’ll be checking out the quality of ice in Massachusetts to see how it stacks up against the rinks at home.

Goal scorers in Monday’s win included Adrien Garneau, who set the tone with two breakaway markers in the first period, as well as Emmanuel Elie, Jonah Goodman and David Rosenberg.

The Wings hope to continue their success next weekend in Cape Ann and through the league playoffs, which start in the second week of March.
