Fundraising cookbook brings back recipes from the past
By Stanley Baker
The Women’s Group of the Day Centre at St. Margaret launched their fund-raising cookbook 'Lest We Forget' on Feb. 7 at a dessert-and-coffee vernissage at the Centre on Hillside Avenue.
Subtitled 'A Treasury of International Recipes Handed Down from Grandmothers Around the World,' the book was coordinated by Tott Moens and published by her daughter, Marilynn Vanderstaay. More than 20 people contributed to the collection of more than 100 recipes handed down from generation to generation from the participants’ families.
The launch was attended by staff and members of the Day Centre, and featured many kudos, toasts and merriment as contributors celebrated the book's long-awaited publication.
“What makes this cookbook so interesting is that it not only reflects recipes handed down from great grandmothers to our participants, but that they come from around the world with recipes from 10 different countries, including the Ukraine, Poland, Italy, Holland and the Caribbean,” said Moens, who is an experienced cook herself. "The fact that the median age of the participants is 85 makes the book that more valid as a heritage cookbook.”
Proceeds from sales of the book will be put toward the purchase of an FM Assistive Listening System, a device which will enhance the enjoyment of presentations for Centre members who are audibly challenged.
