Heiress’ appearance a triumph of bad taste over class, manners
So Paris Hilton was in town for a night of clubbing and it’s front-page news. The same newspapers that run tortured op-ed pieces wondering why little girls idolize the overindulged heiress — famous for drunken promiscuity and whose name has become synonymous with trash - go and feature her prominently on the front page.

The next day, when hospitals announce a reported 900-per cent increase in cases of venereal disease in Montreal, we’ll know why.
I won’t even write her name, for fear that her fame will continue to grow and spread, like bacteria, across the West Island and

its kids.

She’s bigger than Harry Potter, which is why I channelled the series’ lead baddie Lord Voldemort, whom characters are so afraid of they won’t even speak his name.

That’s how nervous this particular young lady and her ilk make me in terms of my daughter’s future.

I don’t want her to ever say ‘You know, partying every night and whoring around look like fun. My turn!”

The blight on society has managed to parlay no talent of any particular kind and couple it with what-will-she-do-next anticipation from the likes of People and US magazines, whose breathless coverage of Hilton’s comings and goings are treated with the seriousness of heads of state.

She came out of her 23-day prison stay for violations of conditions stemming from a previous DUI arrest, saying she had found religion and wanted to make the world a better place for kids.

She reinforced her newfound seriousness and commitment to her faith by jetting off to sunbathe topless on a Greek isle.

Can we all please stop lauding her?

The Old Montreal club owner whose establishment hosted She-who-must-not-be-named said in the story that Hilton’s presence was a ‘a gift between friends’ and there was no appearance fee negotiated.

Sure, there wasn’t. And that envelope full of cash going back the other way was also a gift between friends. Shoot, if someone gave me an envelope full of cash, I’d be their friend for a long time.

This is a lesson, though, that I don’t want to pass on to my little girl. What I want to tell her is that people value her for her heart and her mind, and not because she constantly decides to go commando when going out at night.

This role model for young girls everywhere* (*denoted heavy sarcasm) comes into town and gets a reception fit for a queen, while there are children in Montreal who don’t even get breakfast because their parents can’t afford it. I realize, though, that hungry children living in poverty isn’t nearly as much fun to talk about over the water cooler, and a lot less likely to get the idle rich to part with $250 for a bottle of vodka at a club.ꆱ
