P.Q. HURTS MONTREAL: "Walking into Victoria Hall on Monday night, one might easily have mistaken Mayor Peter Trent for a provincial politician as he shared the stage with three MNAs seated in front of a Liberal party poster. However, the subject of the soirée, the future of Montreal, is one Trent holds close as mayor of Westmount and president of the Conference of Suburban Mayors. 'The question is whether the Montreal region will be a player on the world stage, whether it will be a bit player, have a walk-on part or be a member of the supporting cast,' he told the crowd. 'The PQ is pulling out a hook and removing us from the stage.'"

Thirty-Five Years Ago

September 21, 1972

GREEN PLANS: "City plans for landscaping of the vacant land left in the wake of the construction of the Trans-Canada Highway in southeast Westmount were to be shown to members of the urban renewal interim advisory committee last night. This was promised in response to a complaint by Fred Leclaire that the provincial authorities had removed the last of the greenery by cutting down all remaining trees, including a century-old oak, and was laying stone slabs."

Forty-Five Years Ago

September 21, 1962

NEW TECHNOLOGY: "For years some of the principal banes and beefs of police departments has been the tremendous amount of time consumed in making out reports, either by hand or by typewriter, cutting into patrols and investigations. But now, thanks to electronic devices, those days are over for the Westmount Police Department. Officers now dictate their reports, which are tape-recorded and then later transcribed by an expert typist."

Fifty-Five Years Ago

September 19, 1952

SEEING STARS: "'Star Night', one of the most popular annual events held in Westmount Park, is scheduled next Thursday, when 20 or more telescopes will be placed in front of the bandstand. The event is the annual Star Night of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, Montreal Centre. This is the eighth consecutive year that the society, under the sponsorship of the City of Westmount, has given the residents of this and surrounding communities an opportunity to view the moon and other celestial objects."

Sixty-Five Years Ago

September 17, 1942

SETTING SAIL: "The White Ensign was raised with fitting ceremony on the HCMS Westmount, after being formally taken over by the navy at the Toronto shipbuilding company's yards on Tuesday. Due to wartime conditions, there was no official delegation to the ceremony. The men who built the HCMS Westmount and the men who will sail and fight her met as the trim, new minesweeper was handed over to the Royal Canadian Navy and dedicated to the cause of 'the Dominion, the Empire and the world.'"
