Local author wins second writing honour — at age 6
Congratulations to six-year-old Elaine Ann Manoj of Kensington Avenue, who was recently bestowed the honorary title of Reading Rainbow Young Writer and Illustrator 2007 by Mountain Lake PBS.
The grade 1 student at St. George's School was selected one of the top five authors in her grade level for her story 'Cool Cats Town'. She was the only child from Canada who was selected in the annual contest, which is open to children from kindergarten to grade 3.

But this is not the first time Elaine has been dubbed a Reading Rainbow Young Writer and Illustrator. Proud parents George Manoj and Sanju Manoj point out that last year, when she was in kindergarten, Elaine was also selected in the same PBS contest for her story 'The Girl Who Loved Her Father'.

Cecile Klein turns 100

Mrs. Cecile Klein recently celebrated her 100th birthday with Shaar Hashomayim’s Open Gate group, her family from Montreal and Los Angeles in attendance. Mrs. Klein, pictured below surrounded by her family, still lives on her own and, according to Open Gate director Bea Levine, is “quiet, intelligent and a very respectful woman.” She has been a regular Open Gate participant for over a decade. We wish Mrs. Klein a very happy birthday, with much happiness and good health to come.

Celebrating the Manoir

Local Rotarians took some time out of their busy schedules last Thursday for the annual cocktail party to celebrate the anniversary of Manoir Westmount. The well-known retirement home at the corner of Sherbrooke Street and Lansdowne Avenue, next door to Victoria Hall, was built by the Rotary Club nearly 30 years ago.

Art flourishes at the Bellefeuille

Those who appreciate good, old-fashioned landscape painting will be knocked out by the brilliant pastoral art of John McCormick, which is currently on display at Galerie de Bellefeuille on Greene Avenue. The San Francisco-based McCormick goes back to the basics and has produced some simple yet striking images of rural America. But hurry, the exhibition ends July 2. For more information call 514-933-4406.

Bowling news

Westmount Lawn Bowling Club president Stanley Baker reports that 42 members of the local club took part in the St. Jean Baptiste Championship, which was held on Sunday, June 24 at the Westmount bowling green.

Anyone interested in learning the sport is invited to the local club on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. It is located at 401 Kensington Ave., next to Westmount City Hall. Bowls and coaching are provided. There is no dress code, except flat-soled shoes are required. For more information, call Stanley Baker at 514-931-8690.

Remember your Friends

If you're taking advantage of the warm weather by doing a bit of tidying up around the house or garage, Friends of the Westmount Library ask that you think of them if you have any books you wish to donate for their book sales. They accept quality hardcovers and paperbacks in reasonable condition, on all subjects. Proceeds from the Friends' sales are put towards acquiring new books for the library. Used books may be dropped off at the main circulation desk at the library, 4574 Sherbrooke St. W.
