Westmount mosquitoes in baseball final
By Noah Sidel
Following a solid 5-2-0 regular season, the Westmount Wings are in a dogfight with the Côte St. Luc Avengers for mosquito intercommunity baseball supremacy.
“The Wings did really well in mosquito and should really challenge to win the division,” said Westmount Recreation’s Bruce Stacey.

Westmount wrapped the season up in second place behind those same Avengers, who finished undefeated at 6-0-0. The Hampstead Hawks were third at 4-4-0, with the Montreal West Mudhens coming in behind them at 3-4-0 and TMR at the bottom of the league with an 0-8-0 record.

“Our players work very hard and you can see it on the field,” said Stacey of the Wings, who play their homes games out of the Westmount Athletic Grounds behind Westmount High School.

“They are well coached and they compete well with the other communities.”

In recent years, the intercommunity league has been dominated by Côte St. Luc and Hampstead, and indeed, those two cities are facing off in the championship series of both the peewee and bantam divisions.

Hampstead led the way in peewee play with an 8-1-1 record, with TMR coming in second at 5-3-0, CSL third at 5-5-0, Dollard-des-Ormeaux in fourth at 3-4-1 and Westmount in last at 1-9-0.

It was much of the same for the local squad at the bantam level, with TMR leading the league at 6-1-1, Hampstead second at 4-2-1, MoWest third at 3-2-2, CSL fourth with a 2-5-0 mark and Westmount last at 1-6-0.

“There’s an ebb-and-flow effect in these leagues. As the players get older, sometimes a group will be stronger as they advance and the younger kids will struggle,” Stacey said.

“In this case, the mosquitoes are our strongest team and the future looks good for us.”

The mosquito Wings kicked off their title series against Côte St. Luc past press time on Tuesday night, and will play Game 2 this Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at the WAG.

The peewee series between CSL and Hampstead has already completed two games, both too late to make it into this newspaper. The bantams play Game 2 tonight at Pierre Elliot Trudeau Park in Côte St. Luc.

“All in all, the intercommunity baseball program is doing very well,” Stacey said.

“We had a little bit of a drawback with DDO dropping out of mosquito and bantam at the last minute, but we actually got most of our games in this year. The kids in all of the communities are really into the games and baseball is thriving across the board.”
