New procedures eliminate line-ups at Vic Hall

Parents dreading the upcoming registration period for Westmount's Sports & Recreation spring and summer activities will be pleased to hear that they no longer have to spend hours standing in line, counting all the people ahead of them and worrying that there will be no places left for their children.

The City of Westmount has announced important changes to the registration process, including an extended registration period and guaranteed access to most activities. This means no more line-ups at Victoria Hall, as all registration will take place at the Westmount Arena between March 22 and April 1. Those wishing to register need only show up at the arena during the designated hours with their completed forms and proof of residence. "We're trying to avoid hundreds of people coming in on the first day," said Sports & Recreation coordinator Andrew Maislin. "We're taking everyone, so there's no rush — as long as you come in during those first two weeks."

Maislin added that registration hours will be extended to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the two-week period in order to accommodate people's work schedules. "It has been organized in a way to help take a lot of stress out of a parent's daily life," he said.

The new registration procedures, as well as a full list of activities, are included in the latest edition of the Culture, Sports and Recreation Activities Guide, which was being delivered to all Westmount addresses last week by Canada Post. Those who have not received their copy can pick one up at Westmount City Hall, the arena, or Victoria Hall. The same information is also all available on the City of Westmount website at www.westmount.org. The online information will be revised as needed, ensuring that residents always have access to the most accurate and up-to-date details.

Men's soccer joins the list

There are several new activities listed this year, including men’s soccer, Spanish conversation, sustainable gardening practices, and theatre for children aged 9 to 13. Also included is a comprehensive calendar of upcoming community events, an overview of services offered by the Westmount Public Library and a contact list for Westmount community groups and resources.

The registration period for spring and summer activities — for Westmount residents only — is March 22, 23, 26, 29 and 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and March 24, 25, 31 and April 1 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Westmount Arena, 4675 Ste. Catherine St. W. All places are guaranteed during this period, with the sole exception of the activity Introduction to the Music World for children.

There will also be registration for residents (places not guaranteed) beginning Tuesday, April 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and registration for non-residents (places not guaranteed) beginning Wednesday, April 7 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration during this period may be done at the arena or at Victoria Hall, 4626 Sherbrooke St. W.
