“It’s a very exciting time for the Green Party, and it’s a special honour to have Elizabeth May with us tonight,” said Genest, introducing the federal party's leader.
“I’m very happy to be here tonight because this upcoming by-election is an amazing opportunity for the Green Party to gain influence in Quebec and at the national level," said a barefoot May as volunteers from the Green Squad welcomed supporters and offered them organic wine and juice.
May wasted no time in reminding her audience of the main campaign policies, such as moving away from fossil fuels and bringing a new level of awareness to environmental concerns.
“The more idealistic we are, the more realistic we are,” said May. “Claude William is bringing politics of hope and ambition to Westmount - Ville Marie. With your vote, we can change the landscape of politics in September.”
“This year we have the biggest and the boldest budget for a campaign in the history of the Green Party in Quebec," Genest said. "We need it because it’s a difficult campaign, not a lot of people vote for the by-election”
With the election less than a month away, Genest will focus on reaching as many people as possible and encouraging them to vote Green. “You can’t change the government, but you can change the world," Genest told his supporters, many of whom were sporting the Green Party T-shirts and pins that were being sold. "You can afford not to vote strategically on Sept. 8, but to vote with your heart and your values.”

Personally I am no longer sure what to do. I have been a card carrying Liberal member through some very tough times such as Gomery but now I am even more embarrassed than ever to admit my partisanship. Dion permitted more than 43 abstentions in the House of Commons by both himself and all of his MPS. We did not elect people to not vote this is one of their principal responsibilities! How lacklustre and I would be curious to see how Garneau would react if told by the whip not to show up to vote? Now we have Elizabeth May marketing herself and her candidates here in Montreal. However I would like to know what the full deal is between her and Stephane Dion, who she openly admits she is backing for the next PM. So not only does she make a deal to run in a Nova Scotia riding, she completes an accord such that she will not speak against Dion in exchange for no liberal candidate to run against her. I truly suspect that she will soon run (perhaps 2011) as a liberal candidate. She is essentially as one of my Green party friends said "an open Liberal mole, and any card-carrying member of the Green Party would be a fool not to do everything they could to have her removed as leader. If Elizabeth May continues to spend all her time supporting the Liberals why don’t I quit the greens to work for Dion. Why wouldn’t I? Because Dion was part of the decade of neglect by the liberals. Hes all talk in opposition and no action in government. Why would any self respecting environmentalist vote for the LPC which has consistently done nothing to advance these issues inside and out of Parliament? She obviously has not looked at the Libs environmental record either. Sure they pushed for Kyoto and signed on but NEVER ratified it under a majority watch when they had complete power WHY?" If everyone, about to vote in the by-elections or soon in the general, would take a minute and consider the true issues that concerns yourselves and Elizabeth would take a moment and stop acting as a publicist for the LPC, she would quickly realize how the NDP is, has been and apparently will be the only party taking on Harper in Parliament consistently as even the Bloc spent the first year under Harper constantly voting with them, permitting the Cons to initialize their rebranding of Canada! Thank you Westmount Examiner for taking the time to cover these by-elections is nice to see that some media still believe that reporting on the local matters is very significant as its only with little incremental changes that big change can be achieved! As such I think I may try change myself and vote for Anne Dowson Lagace!
