JOHNSON AIDS ROBILLARD: “Quebec Liberal leader Daniel Johnson chose Westmount last Saturday to formally endorse his former cabinet minister and now federal Liberal candidate Lucienne Robillard in the St-Henri-Westmount riding-by-election. Johnson, also chief of the No committee against separation, cited Robillard’s experience as cabinet minister with several portfolios, making her ‘perfectly equipped’ to handle the upcoming referendum battle.”

February 14, 1985

CP KEEPS STATION: “Westmount station will continue to be used as a railway facility even after commuter trains begin stopping at the new Vendome station later this year, it was learned Thursday last week. Canadian Pacific vice-president G. (Gerry) Benoit delivered the news to a special meeting of officials of Arts Westmount, the Westmount Historical Association and the City of Westmount held at city hall, effectively defusing local efforts to have the station preserved for community use.”

February 12, 1965

MAPLE LEAF RAISED: “The City of Westmount will raise the new Canadian flag Monday as Canadians from coast to coast inaugurate their national flag. It will be the first time in the history of the city that a flag other than the Union Jack will top city flag poles.”

February 8, 1940

EXTENDED SKI RUN: “Westmount Mountain, in future, will provide skiers with a run hundreds of feet longer than any they could hitherto find in this city. In order to make the run possible, municipal authorities have closed to motorists the portion of Summit Circle extending from Summit Road, at the east, to Oakland avenue, at the west. Closing of the road will give skiers the opportunity to ski from the north side of the Mountain down its slope away from the City for a distance of approximately 1,600 feet. They will be able to go, from their starting point at the summit, to within a short distance of the Montreal ski club.”

NOVELIST VISITS: “On Sunday Reverend C.W. Gordon, better known as Ralph Connor, Canada’s most famous novelist, will give an address in St. Andrew’s Church. For the past few years Ralph Connor has been in constant demand as a lecturer throughout the United States and Great Britain and at the end of the present month will sail from Vancouver to lecture throughout the large centres in Australia and New Zealand.”
